What is dry needling?
A modern, evidence-based physiotherapy technique that targets specific muscle trigger points using thin, sterile needles.
Dry needling is a modern, evidence-based physiotherapy technique that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific “trigger points” within tight muscle tissue. The term “dry” refers to the fact that no liquid is injected — only the needle itself creates the therapeutic effect.
When a needle is inserted into a trigger point, it stimulates a local twitch response — a brief involuntary contraction of the muscle. This releases the knot, improves blood flow to the area, and reduces referred pain patterns that often accompany muscle tightness.
Dry needling differs from traditional acupuncture in that it is based on Western anatomy and neuroscience, targeting specific musculoskeletal structures rather than traditional meridian points.
Safety & what to expect.
Dry needling is a safe procedure when performed by a trained physiotherapist. Here's what you should know before your session.
Performed only by qualified, trained physiotherapists
Single-use, sterile needles — never reused
Thorough health screening before each session
Contraindicated in pregnancy (first trimester) — alternative treatments offered
Not suitable for needle phobia or certain blood disorders — we discuss alternatives
Minor bruising or temporary soreness is normal and resolves quickly
Dry needling is typically used as one component of a broader physiotherapy treatment plan. It is often combined with manual therapy, exercise prescription, and education for best results. Our physiotherapist will discuss whether dry needling is appropriate for your specific condition at your initial assessment.
